Background of the Study
Public health emergencies, such as disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and pandemics, present significant challenges to local governments, particularly in regions with limited infrastructure and resources. In Ibi Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State, managing such emergencies has been hindered by various geopolitical challenges. These challenges include political leadership, resource allocation, intergovernmental coordination, and socio-cultural factors that affect community engagement in health initiatives. The response to public health emergencies often requires a coordinated effort between local, state, and federal authorities, but geopolitical factors such as political rivalries and competing priorities can undermine this cooperation. This study seeks to assess the geopolitical challenges that affect the management of public health emergencies in Ibi LGA, focusing on how local, state, and national policies interact to either enhance or hinder emergency responses.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Public health emergencies in Ibi LGA are often exacerbated by geopolitical challenges, including inadequate coordination between various levels of government, lack of funding, and insufficient community involvement. The political climate and governance issues in Taraba State affect the effectiveness of emergency management strategies, resulting in delays and inefficiencies. This study aims to explore these challenges and assess their impact on the management of public health emergencies in Ibi.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the impact of geopolitical factors on the management of public health emergencies in Ibi LGA.

  • To evaluate the role of local, state, and federal government coordination in managing health emergencies in the region.

  • To recommend strategies for overcoming geopolitical challenges in public health emergency management in Ibi LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do geopolitical factors influence the management of public health emergencies in Ibi LGA?

  • What role does intergovernmental coordination play in responding to public health emergencies in Ibi LGA?

  • What strategies can be adopted to improve the management of public health emergencies in Ibi, given the geopolitical challenges?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical challenges, such as political rivalry and governance issues, negatively affect the management of public health emergencies in Ibi LGA.

  • Intergovernmental coordination, influenced by state and federal policies, is a key factor in the success or failure of public health emergency management in Ibi.

  • Strengthening local government capacity and intergovernmental collaboration can improve responses to public health emergencies in Ibi LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide crucial insights into how geopolitical factors impact the management of public health emergencies in Ibi LGA. The findings will help policymakers and health authorities identify areas of improvement in governance, coordination, and resource allocation during health crises. Additionally, it will contribute to the broader understanding of public health emergency management in politically and economically diverse regions (Adamu & Tijani, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on public health emergency management in Ibi LGA, Taraba State. It will assess the role of local, state, and federal governments, as well as community factors, in managing health crises. Limitations include the challenge of obtaining timely health data and political sensitivities surrounding emergency management practices.
